Note: Ellie refers to Zombies as Geeks
Ellie looked down the long dirt path, pulling up her backpacks straps, they kept sliding off her small frame, even when tightened. Her ice pick swinging at her side as she walked, a guitar in the other. She had been walking for about a full day now, but this was all familiar territory for her. While trips out to the countryside were no where near frequent, she made sure to come down at least once a month. The fresh air was nice. The whole city was tainted with the smell of rotten flesh, still full of screams as survivors dwindle each day. She expected them now, did she try to track down the source of the scream? No. She didn't know that voice. To her it was just a future Geek. One less person out there trying to take food around the city that could be hers in time. The wind was subtle this morning, gently causing Ellie's brown hair to sway along with the breeze. Finally, as her feet were starting to feel numb, she noticed the familiar tree she saw so many times. As much as possible ever since she had to end Tonya's miserable life. No child should have to live through this. A bitter laugh emitted from the lonely girl, realizing and remembering, she was just a kid too. It was easy to forget when you had to act like a grown up. Now, you had to make life or death quick decisions. You didn't normally have fun anymore. What is fun? Ellie forget the sensation of enjoying something so much you didn't want it to end. Adjusting her hood on her head, she breathed heavily against the medical mask, looking around. A farm was up ahead a ways. But Ellie didn't think anyone was there, she didn't have any trouble before, but, you never know. Reaching the top of the small hill where the old yet large and empowering oak tree still stood. It's beauty seemed even more righteous in the glow of the sun. It made you forget the geeks just down the road.
Setting her pack down, she sat next to a small mound with a makeshift cross sticking out of the head, where Tonya lay. The only family member she was able to give a proper burial. Sitting down next to the grave, her back rested up against the tree, she pulled out the guitar, her eyes resting on the cross. No one had tampered with it yet, thankfully. She envisioned the cute little one year old girl, and the face she made when Ellie raised her axe. The young child's quick scream still haunted Ellie in her dreams. I bet she hates me now.. The only reason Ellie still fought to live was for her. She couldn't have Tonya's life in vain. If she wanted to, she could have turned with her sister, died together, hand in hand. But Ellie was selfish, she wanted to live at the time. Now, it was just making sure Tonya's life was worth something. Ellie let her mind loose, lowered her hood, and removed the mask from her mouth as she started to strum, and lightly sing, imagining the child swaying gently beside her. It was her birthday after all. Now two years old. The geeks were a good ways a way, and probably wouldn't take to her music, and if they did, she wasn't afraid to die here next to her sister. But really, the geeks were slow today and seemed to be heading in the opposite direction.
